Wayside Monitoring and Diagnostic System (WMDS)

BBT609 (CC-SA 3.0)

We worked to implement extensive on-board diagnostic and monitoring systems for rolling stock on behalf of a major passenger carrier in order to ensure fleet reliability and minimal cost.  Prior to the implementation of WMDS systems, the carrier relied on paper reports from operating staff to track failure conditions, which did not always indicate the fault conditions precisely, and much effort was required by the shop troubleshooting staff to reproduce the issue.  The WMDS brought about a technology revolution in how running repair is conducted at the rolling stock maintenance facilities.  Mr Kesich created a technical support group that assisted repair technicians in diagnosing problems and achieved significantly reduced time spent troubleshooting as well as lowered the probability of repeat failures.  WMDS was a combination of wayside and onboard technologies implemented on the following fleets:

  • Bombardier M7
  • Kawasaki/Melco M8
  • BT/Siemens PTC
  • Wheel Impact Load Detectors (WILD)
