I have seen how processing and interpreting data for more effective operational decisions has been transformed in my over more than 40 years in the field.
My first job out of engineering school was in the Industrial Engineering Department at New York City Transit at a time when the city’s subways were filthy and unreliable. On a typical day, one-fifth of the subway cars were stalled in storage yards by mechanical failure. The ones in operation were not in much better shape -- a third of them had broken doors and nearly as many had lighting problems. Shockingly, a subway car was catching fire nearly seven times a day and upgrades to the subway system had been deferred for decades.
I am immensely proud of the work that our team did to rebuild the subway system – creating new ways to collect and analyze data, developing innovative performance measures, and prioritizing improvements based on rigorous analytical methods. When I first started working at NYC Transit, subways were breaking down about every 6,000 miles; when I left, they typically operated more than 150,000 miles without a breakdown.
I started Reddy Analytics because I wanted to bring the same sophisticated analysis to the problems facing other transportation agencies. Data processing and analysis can yield more effective operational decisions and outcomes for a wide array of stakeholders. Our team members have advanced the state of the art in analyzing data and pushing the boundaries of digital visualization.
